Repair or replace. Which should I do?

November 19, 2023 GRS

Deciding whether to patch up your existing gutters or invest in a full replacement can be tricky. Here is a guide to help you make the right decision for your home and budget.

When to REPAIR

Repairs are suitable for minor, localized issues on otherwise healthy gutters.

  • Single Leaks: If there is just one leaking joint or a small hole, a patch or sealant is sufficient.
  • Loose Hangers: If the gutters are in good condition but just loose, re-securing the brackets is a simple fix.
  • Minor Damage: If one section was damaged by a falling branch but the rest of the system is fine, you can just replace that specific section.

When to REPLACE

Replacement is necessary when the system is failing or nearing the end of its lifespan.

  • Widespread Rust: If you see rust spots on multiple sections, the metal is compromised. Patching one hole will just lead to another appearing nearby soon.
  • Multiple Leaks/Cracks: If you are chasing leaks all around the house, the sealant and material have likely degraded.
  • Sagging/Pulling Away: If gutters are sagging significantly or pulling away from the house, the fascia might also be damaged. A full assessment and replacement is often safer.
  • Age: Galvanized steel gutters typically last 20 years. If yours are older and showing wear, upgrading to modern Colorbond or Aluminium (which don't rust) is a better long-term investment.

The Cost-Benefit Analysis

If the cost of repairs approaches 50% of the cost of a new installation, replacement is usually the smarter choice. New gutters come with warranties, look better, and add value to your home, whereas repairs are often just a temporary band-aid on an aging system.
